To be fair, public transport in London is much cheaper then most other places in the UK.
Bus fares up north are very expensive, and that's in the cities, not out in the sticks.

Bus fare in general is very expensive.

I was astonished by the price I had to pay last week.

I took my car to get MOT'd near my mum and then caught a bus to her house. Approx... 10 miles?

That's pretty steep. I pay £12 for a weekly ticket down here in Exeter.

When I was on "Jobseekers", it barely covered the price of catching the bus every day into town. That's six miles.

Thankfully, I have the Internet so I can "travel" without catching the bus. I only went into town once a fortnight to sign on and buy a few groceries.

Now I have a car, and even with the high petrol prices it still usually works out half the price of a bus ticket. For a couple or a family, it's a no-brainer. It might take 3x as long to get to London by car than it does by train, but it's still cheaper than the peak rate fairs even allowing for parking.

Hell, I've never actually earned enough to afford the train fair to London. Trains are a luxury only the super-rich can afford at peak times

I can't remember exactly where you are JJ, but is there anywhere on the line that goes through Warwick Parkway near you? Iirc it's cheaper, and certainly much more reliable than WCM.

I live in Northampton on the London-Birmingham line. It's an hours drive to get to Parkway, although that could be useful info if I happened to be visiting Mr&Mrs Zippy who live pretty much on the line!

I have no problem with the service. Midlands is slow, but off-peak it's relatively cheap. I think it's about £20 return, or less if you book on-line in advance. The Virgin Express is absolutely fantastic - incredibly fast and very comfortable, even as a second class citizen.

Unfortunately, both services are approaching £100 at peak times when you add on station parking or a taxi. If you need to be in the London office for 9am, it's just not affordable. It's only 60miles FFS...

that just tells me that they wish to keep everything that is out of London, out of London …

Unless you're a tourist cash-cow, in which case they'll bus you in for free.

London is like a separate state, where the people who "have" like to live and ensure that no one outside their club gets any...

Of course, most people in London don't actually belong to this club either. They just work there...

I can understand the tube increase, but the bus increase is way too much. When I travel to London I get a combined bus and train ticket that covers me on the local buses and the train to and from London and it is a crazy low price. I am obviously restricted to non peak trains but that I can live with that. Fortunately I know my way around central London so can walk everywhere I need, so do not need the all day bus ticket for London unless I am in a rush, which is rare.

It took a tube strike for me to realise just how small the centre of London is, although I've always known it on a theoretical level. The walk from Euston to the west end was actually quite pleasant; mostly due to the tube strike meaning there was hardly anyone there to get in my way!

I'll take your "£7 for 10 miles" and raise you "£3.10 for 3 miles". My work to my home, Chacewater to Mount Ambrose, costs a quid per mile. Good old FGW

Believe! Buses down here are non-existent and the ones that do operate are completely extortionate! Everyone else should think themselves lucky they can actually use some public transport, instead of having to run their own car.
