This is a bit of an interesting one - the news here stated that Google may be asked to pull out if they now refuse to censor out the search results.

They haven't named the government directly - but this would suggest they are pointing the finger.

Being that Google only hold a third of the market in China would it really be a big step? Will Google even be able to operate there without censoring the results?

It's that China seems to be such a big emerging market that makes me wonder why they'd pull out, when ostensibly the only way is up :?

A third of the market is still over 100 million users. That's more than any country in Europe, and it's growing fast.

If they stop censoring the .cn version, then they'll be firewalled. They may as well just turn it off. Of course, a lot of people in China do know how to get around the firewall, but they can use the .com instead of .cn anyway so they won't be effected.

Some of my friends' websites are unavailable in China, and there's nothing subversive about them at all. One of them was an "educational vacation in London" site specifically aimed at the Chinese market selling residential language courses. The great firewall can be quite troublesome for such ventures.

1/3 of a billion people is still a hell of a lot of advertising revenue to lose.

Steve Ballmer has distanced Microsoft from Google's row with China, playing down concerns about cyber-attacks and censorship.

"There are attacks every day. I don't think there was anything unusual, so I don't understand," said Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer at a meeting on modernising government services at the White House.

"We're attacked every day from all parts of the world and I think everybody else is too. We didn't see anything out of the ordinary."

The comments come after Google threatened to pull out of China, citing censorship and cyber-attacks on human rights activists' email accounts.

Google claimed more than 20 other large companies had been the target of cyber-attacks originating in China, but Microsoft claims it has no evidence that it was attacked.

When asked if Microsoft had any plan to pull its business out of China, Ballmer answered "No. I don't understand how that helps anything. I don't understand how that helps us and I don't understand how that helps China."

Microsoft has high hopes for its Bing search engine in China, which has only a small share of the market, but could benefit if Google pulls out.

Ballmer's comments run counter to broad political support for Google. The White House claims it's backing Google's decision to no longer support China's censoring of searches.

Have to say I agree with Ballmer for the most part here, especially since the WH seems to be keen on supporting Google's slightly odd comments :?

"WOOOO!" "I LOVE THIS MONEY!!!!"

I'm glad Google are choosing principles over profit and are pulling out of China, I only wish they'd decided not to go in in the first place.
