Like I say, I think the lens Al tried is broken. Actually, I seem to recall he mentioned there was a focus issue with another of his lenses, so I wonder if it's actually the camera at fault?

I was certainly shocked by the results he got. I like the idea of yours being pin-sharp though!

The pics were not taken by me but both were taken on a brand new 50D. I discussed the focus issue at length with the photographer and he took more samples which I will try and put up here later.

I do think I have a focus issue with my 40D and 100-400mm lens and have yet to test them with the old tape measure method. Perhaps if the rain holds off at lunchtime???

There was an issue with some Canon bodies and front/back focus, IIRC. Something to do with body/lens combinations. That's about as much as I know, so might be worth a Google.
Or, you could try manual focus like a proper camera. ;)

Here's a shot I did today. I kept the 50mm wide open for most of the set I've stuck up on Flickr.

Sigma make a 50mm f/2.8 macro in most if not all mounts, and it is very very sharp. Cheap too. I know f/2.8 isn't the fastest, but with 1:1 magnification and a CrAzY minimum aperture of f/45 it's extremely versatile.

I think you just tempted fate, Heather.

Only changing colour every word? Boring! And the capitalisation's pretty predictable too... (8-p)

Everyone's a critic. Can you see the amount of markup required to randomly colour each letter? You'd have to be mad to do that.

:D

I wrote a python script to generate it once. But yes, the output is messy...

Alex - it's the autofocus that causes the issue. Actually it could be an autofocus AnD Image Stabilisation problem because when IS is switched off (and you use a tripod), the issue is difficult to replicate.
