With his age it amounts to a life sentence, but it also pushes back the time for him even being eligible for parole. I think that after all the appeals it would probably be more expensive. That is definitely the case in the US. At least he is off the streets. Plus, would he have pleaded guilty if he thought he might face death? It's not a natural thing to do.

If there were a death penalty would he have pleaded guilty? Probably not. Under our current rules he can get a shorter sentence if he pleaded guilty. +1 I particularly like the use of the word "minimum". I believe he should be incarcerated alongside Ian Huntley, Robert Black and Mick Philpott...... and then all 4 should "inadvertently" be sent for exercise when the rest of the prisioners are out. I still believe there's honour among thieves and I'm sure the others would quickly exact correct punishment.

Yes but they are probably all segregated from the general prison population anyway. The chances of that happening are close to zero. While I can appreciate many would like to see these people dead, there are always miscarriages of justice and at least these people are off the streets.
