Thanks Caz, but I'll managed without ;)

Fin, how do you know about the upgrade situation? I've just read this:
http://community.winsupersite.com/blogs/paul/archive/2009/08/01/microsoft-kills-windows-7-e-editions.aspx
and I'm now unsure what to do. I don't need 7 now, but I don't wanna miss out on a blinding price for a full retail. If it's just an upgrade, I'm not interested.

Did you read the link you posted?

Quote:
Those who pre-ordered Windows 7 "E" through a recent discount offer will get the full version, as Microsoft had promised. However, Microsoft plans to now sell Windows 7 upgrades in Europe and also offer a higher-priced full version (for those without an earlier copy of Windows)--similar to what it is doing in the rest of the world.

I was pointing it out as some of the new pre-orders might not be retail, so take screenshots etc when you order if it says full version

Yes I read it! So you don't know anything more than me? I just don't want an upgrade version and the only reason the deal made sense was if you got full for "upgrade" price. It would appear that I can't be sure of that now and as the deal is for upgrades and the only thing making them "full" was the EU ruling, which may not still be in force by the time they ship, it's possible that people who pre-ordered will get upgrades and not full versions. I would imagine Microsoft will be quite within their rights to do that, as that's what the deal is supposed to be for.

I suppose I should just wait and let the dust settle...

Well I did actually as I can cancel my 'pre-order' at any time up to release without penalty, and as my card hasn't been charged there is no acceptance of contract with the supplier so is not an official order as such :)

It's still an order, whether it was cancelled or not. It's like pre-book, pre-release, pre-plan... I mean, WTF does pre-plan actually mean?

"We'll meet at 0400hrs to pre-plan the plan."

"Right-ho, Skip."

Ah yes, but at this stage it's only an invitation to treat. The "contract" is only formed when your card is charged and the order is shipped.

Surley for geeks and geekettes like ourselves wheather it's upgrade or full is irelevant as we all know once you have a valid serial you can do almost anything so if you buy a cheapo versus a full the only thing it will cost is the time it takes to install . :geek:

Does this answer the question thingy? - clicky

"Well, our understanding is that Microsoft will honour all pre-orders of the Windows 7 E editions with a full retail copy of Windows 7. So, if you've already pre-ordered Windows 7 Home Premium E, for example, you may just have paid around £49.99 for a full copy of Windows 7 Home Premium - with Internet Explorer built in as standard, worth £149.99."

Pre-orders for Apple's upcoming Snow Leopard operating system topped Amazon.com's bestseller list yesterday, knocking Windows 7 out of the chart just days after the online retail giant put Mac OS X 10.6 on its site.

That is amazon.com not .co.uk

And not really suprising seeing as Windows 7 pre-order is unavailable now at the previous promotional price in the USA

So then, you admit that the full price for Windows is too much?

If Win 7 can only beat OS X when it's at a promotional price point, what does that say for Redmond's pricing strategy?

They link to Scan, who are selling Pro for £160. I'm not paying that. However, my link is still saying £100.

Having read all of this now, I feel like it might be too good to be true. I know it's up to me, but do people think I should buy it? Presumably, I can cancel my "pre-order" at any time up to October 22nd and once we have a definite answer on what's going on, I can go from there. No?

I don't want an upgrade version, but I don't care if what I get is OEM, retail, "E" (without browser), or regular. As long as it's not an upgrade. I want a full clean install. Am I missing something? Is anybody else gonna go for it?
