I lusted after that set for ages. Unfortunately, I personally deemed myself too old for lego by the age of 11. Especially since I'd graduated to Meccano at the age of 9. +1.

I read a detailed description of that first one and it does infact have an engine with moving parts. I'm sure thats the one he had.

I know!!! Its an off-roader rather than a race car but has some cool features like LED headlights and motorised suspension. I'd love it but the missus wouldnt be best pleased with me spending £100 on Lego!

 I had one of these...was cool, but the engine was sold seperately...I never had that...I had to push...

This is the first Lego Technical set I had: http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=855-1I believe it was the first Technical set in the country. It looks dreadfully primitive in relation to what is available now, but it was an amazing thing to behold at the time. You had cogs, pulleys. It was an eye opener.
