I'm gonna read the article later, but I absolutely detest the reviews you mention too. Even worse, some of the Sunday papers are basically, '...the plane crash. And then our hero...'
I can think of any number of recent films that if they'd mentioned the editing or post-production 'values', well, I could have made a more informed decision going in. Which is surely the point of a review.
Though I have to say, you do wonder who is to blame/praise for some films (2nd unit directors for good or bad, ADD editing etc), and I'm sure that's true of 'professional' critics too.
