Do movie critics need filmmaking experience or an understanding of film theory to do their jobs?
The article relates mainly to professional film critics, but also touches upon the non-professional.
It's something which has been turning me off reading film reviews for the last few years.
The review mainly consists of a plot/story summary and a small end paragraph relating to if the reviewer liked the film or not.
Literary criticism applied to a visual medium is not a good way to critique what is still an artform.

I'm gonna read the article later, but I absolutely detest the reviews you mention too. Even worse, some of the Sunday papers are basically, '...the plane crash. And then our hero...'

I can think of any number of recent films that if they'd mentioned the editing or post-production 'values', well, I could have made a more informed decision going in. Which is surely the point of a review.

Though I have to say, you do wonder who is to blame/praise for some films (2nd unit directors for good or bad, ADD editing etc), and I'm sure that's true of 'professional' critics too.
