Yes they have. All new employees no longer enjoy the extra pay. Your daughter must be on an older contract.

I know fine well - I had to sign a new contract when I moved store and then lost all the benefits of my old contract - including time-and-a-half on Sundays and "anti-social hours" on a Saturday after 6pm.

It's probably too late now but I'd question if that was legal tbh. If you're transfering within the same company then your exisiting contract should be honoured. Citizens Advbice or Trade Union would have been my first port of call.

I used to think the "Keep Sunday Sacred" people were a bunch of raving nutters, but I now think they were onto something.

I have grown to miss the one day of the week when you couldn't actually buy anything unless you were getting the Sunday papers, petrol or were in the pub. I was quite happy knowing when the shops were open, and don't really feel my life is any better now for being able to buy a Twix at 2.30am.

I think the problem with the raving nutters was their motives seemed religious and we all want freedom to choose when/how we consume. I would prefer to argue that we can still have that choice to an extent. But I can't really do that, because our whole society is based around the concept of weeks and weekends, that it's impossible to escape. The vast majority of people, it seems, work Monday through Friday and want to be able to buy things on Saturday and Sunday. Shame, coz I'm more of an individual than that, but there isn't a lot of room for individuals in this day and age.

So you're an individual? do you have a family? Or because you want to be able to do what you want people who wanna spend time with their family would lose out? Imagine Mom working sunday-thursday, dad tuesday- saturday, kids at school all week... When do you spend any time as a group? Just because you want your comfort to be able to buy on a sunday if you so wish. My life is full enough that i don't need to go to shops on sundays, or at night

I don't have a family. I not saying we should treat Sunday as any other day, I'm saying different days should work for different people and in a society that didn't make such a deal of weekends, that might be possible. That would be my preferred option. However, that's not gonna happen because the Mon-Fri thing is so endemic. I should be able to do what I want, nobody with a family should stop me. That's just common sense. But like I said, it's not that simple.

I think society is too selfish, that's the problem.

It's endemic because it gives society a sense of order. Schools run Monday-Friday so it makes sense that parents work Monday-Friday too. Weekends are supposed to be a chance for the family to be together.

I like the fact I can go into town on a Sunday, it's not something I feel like doing after walking to and from sh1tty work during the week ;)

Though it's actually something I won't be doing too often now since I'm abandoning the overpriced comics soon...

small boutiques are different from big grocery stores. Going to waterstone's is vastly different than dragging your kids to tescos. I have no problem with small, privately owned stores being open. Sunday just shouldn't be a main shopping day

And Mr. Br's Emporium is far better than Waterstones!

What has society being selfish got to do with this debate?

And, what's wrong with society being selfish? It's why our society works!!

Shall we just become a communist state?

I'm bugged when someone says "I don't see why people shouldn't sacrifice their family Sunday because i wanna go shopping." There's a serious lack of cohesion in the population in Britain, everyone does their own business in their corner and then wonder why nothing goes quite right. Protecting the unworked Sunday is for everyone's benefit, personally and financially, only short term thinking people would consider it to be great to be able to go buy your booze at 10 at night on a Sunday.

Or alcoholics.

I agree. If I want to shop at 4 in the morning and I do. Then I go to a big supermarket. It is nice at that time no crowds and relaxing, but most of the time I shop during normal hours at the local supermarket.

That's a whole other debate, right there.

Of course we've all become selfish. We all want everything, we want it right now, we don't want to wait, we know the price of everything but not the value. We push and barge, grumble and complain, road rage, won't stop to help anyone. Everything is someone else's problem, and we don't want to lift a finger to help sort it out.

Our society is not working, at least it's not working as well as it used to when I were a lass. Or that could just be the rose-tinted spectacles of nostalgia taking over again.

For everyone that likes to be able to selfishly shop for their bag of Kettle Chips at 4am on a Sunday, there are maybe 40 people who have to be at work at 4am on a Sunday in order to facilitate that selfishness, who perhaps would rather be tucked up in bed with their loved ones looking forward to a relaxing and quiet Sunday with their families.

Amnesia, if the supermarkets are not crowded at 4am, doesn't that rather tell that the vast majority of people don't want to do their weekly shop at sparrow's fart of a morn? :D

If I felt like my society gave a [LIFTED] about me, I'd be more inclined to reciprocate. We've got immigrants ghetto-izing themselves, religious extremists, OAPs scarred to walk down the street, yoof drinking on corners and then politicians talking bollocks about it all. Fact is, there hasn't been a cohesive society in this country for many, many years. Why should I conform to Mon-Fri (or anything else for that matter) if there's nothing in it for me? I don't have a family, I have to rely on a tiny handful of friends for social interaction outside of work and they're not all around at the weekend. I work at a holiday resort and so regular days off are merely a distant memory.

I understand that most people don't realize what goes into feeding their consumerism 24/7. But we don't have consensus or cohesion enough for me to want to fight for. I'm the kind of person who likes to ponder and discuss the very fundamentals of why Mon-Fri is what it is and other such things that most people not only take for granted, but aren't interested in thinking about or questioning.

I'm always up for a debate and I like having other opinions to consider and learn from, but as it is, simply saying "my family want a Sunday together" isn't good enough in my view. There's a bigger picture to think about....
