Yet the fact that near every film to top the box office for more than three months has been female-focused does not just reflect a growing enthusiasm among women for films: rather, it also marks what some Hollywood film moguls now refer to as the “Xbox” factor, in which many young men and teenage boys increasingly prefer playing sophisticated video games to watching movies.

“A lot of young males are spending much more time on the internet, games and UFC [ultimate fighting],” Peter Guber, chairman of Mandalay Pictures production company and former studio chief at Sony Pictures, told The Sunday Telegraph.

“They have not abandoned movies but they have diminished as a target, while the female audience has remained robust.”

....

The shift in the balance of gender power has accompanied the explosion in the male-dominated video game market – worth about $21 billion in the US in 2008.

The same year, American box offices takings were nearly $10 billion, with another $22 billion spent on DVDs.

I'm likely to spend more time playing games than watching films these days, but that's because I find the general quality of films is getting worse (as I found with the pop charts actually). Christ, I've seen games recently that were better plotted, voice acted and mo-capped than some blockbusters

What about you?

I don't play games, but thanks to free films on telly I've probably watched more movies in the past couple of years than ever before.

I can only watch films on TV now if there's no ads - my tolerance for them is so low now since I've gotten used to doing other things. Even with films on the BBC I often think 'Sure it'll be on again soon enough', or 'Why start it at that time?'

Yes I play more video games than I watch films.

I go to the cinema two or three times a year, but that doesn't seem to be particularly unusual??

Ha. Have you seen the amount of films I watch? Draw your own conclusions.

Movies around 8 times a year on average. Video games zero atm, but usually 3-4hrs a week. DVD/BD/TV movies 3 or 4 a week.

I haven't played any modern video games and I don't own a console. So no, video games haven't impacted my movie watching. Nor should they.

However, I believe I'm in a very small minority who regard cinema as a wondrous art form and don't enjoy skill-less violence.

I would say I watch less movies on the TV (and less TV) as I can “waste” an evening paying a game.
I don’t think that it has made much (if any) difference to the number of times I would go to the actual pictures.
I used to go a lot when I lived in Sheffield as my house was 10 mins walk from a showcase and I had a unlimited card. Now that its a drive and I have to pay I go a lot less

I hardly ever watch films these days, they just don't grab me. I've had Donnie Darko sat on Sky Plus for months and still haven't got round to watching it

I hardly ever watch films. Maybe once or twice a month on TV, and once a year at the cinema. Seriously; how many new films are there worth watching every year?

I don't really play video games, but I've certainly watched far less TV in general since I've had Internet. I used to watch low grade programming for several hours a day. Now I only watch a bit on Friday and Saturday night while my brain is turned off.

I've probably seen more films this month than you have in the last ten years! (8+0

Okay, on reflection, my above post may have been somewhat over enthusiastic, for that I do apologise.
