Just been on the other halfs laptop, so I had to google x404 instead of using a bookmark. Interesting to see what it brought up. Note top link.

Mega lolz

Wonder what kind of people will join after seeing that, they will think we all bunch of raging 15 year olds.
I think it is bad karma catching up with us for spamming old TMP with all those swear words...

So how do we fix that?

Do we post

" x404 the fun place to be " as often as we can and then link to it?

index.php

No - the site has an index.html page which has a link on it, right?

Right - get semantic with that page. You want to out in some keywords and other data for Google’s search bot to get busy with. If you have HTML like this in the body of the page, you may start to get reasonable links:

Code:
<h1>x404 - the home for the ex-Dennis publisher’s forum users</h1>
<p>When Dennis changed their forums for the worse, we decided to set up our own forum preserving. Now readers of <en>MacUser</em>, <em>PCPro</em> [insert other magazine titles in the same format here] can get together and discuss a broad range of subjects.</p>

<h2>Forums for Mac users</h2>
<p><a href="URL for the mac boards here>Talk about Macs and their workings here</a></p>

<h2>Forum for Linux users</h2>
<p><a href="URL for the Linux boards here>Talk about Macs and their workings here</a></p>

<h2>Forum for Windows users</h2>
<p><a href="URL for the Windows boards here>Talk about Macs and their workings here</a></p>

<h2>The Meeting Place</h2>
<p><a href="URL for the Meeting Place boards here>General chatter and fun</a></p>

[i]Continue in same vein for photography, HiFi etc..[/i]

The h1, h2 tags are really handy as they tell Google that they are a heading, and it will rank following content if it appears relevant to the heading. So use a keyword in the h tag, and repeat it in the following paragraph - what I have given is an example - you need to figoure out the best working so that it]s compelling for both Google and humans. Remember, that text will be shown in Google’s search results. The links help reinforce this, and spidered content from those links will get fed into the index.

Don’t make the index.html page auto direct to the forum, as Google will see this as a form of spamming. However, as long as this landing page is accessible to humans (which it is), and doesn’t conceal anything, it will be perfectly accessible to have it as a start page for the site.

The people that posted the swearing go and edit there posts to something more fluffy, much as you suggest. Swearing might have been fun at the time, but it's not big or clever to leave it there for all and every person to read for evermore

The MS bots are pretty fast to update - much more so than Google.
