That’s where you started POKEing values to a REM statement in the first line, which had the memory address of 16514. To call it, your next line would be something like
Code:
RAND USR 16514


And your machine code would run. I spent may a frustrating hour typing in hex code from magazines to get machine code to run.

I had friends who would actually write programs in hex. They actually were able to sell them and did rather well for a time.

That’s impressive. The BBC Micro was better as it had an assembler built in, but even with that I never got that good at writing code. I stuck with BASIC.

I started with BASIC and stayed with it. I could do most of what I wanted in BASIC.
