You could try freezing them for a few days if you need any data. ;) ;)

I heard that if you take a dead drive and stroke it with the feather of an eagle at an altitude of 8743ft you can get your data off fine.

Thanks Steve, however I have lost no data. It is just that my belt and braces both snapped in the same week. My trousers did not fall down. i.e. I have lost two backups but the internal drive is still sound.

Well time flies.

I have had the expensive external drive 3 years and two weeks.

I may try fitting a new HDD to it if you guy think it may be worth the effort.

The enclosure is a LaCie d2 Firewire 400/800/usb type. There are two screws protected by seals on the back.

Looks like this but without the Esata

Go for it. If you can, replace it with the same model drive to make sure it will work.

Does this look like yours:

http://www.init6tech.com/apple/lacie-d2 ... eplacement

Be sure to check it's definitely SATA before you buy a new drive, because the earlier ones were PATA. I suspect yours is the earlier one, hence the lack of eSATA port. You may as well at least take it to bits and have a look, since you have nothing to lose except maybe the screws.

That is a useful link JJ thanks.

I will wait till I have a quite hour and give it a go. If it does not work then the drive will come in handy if I do get a Drobo.

:)

It's also going to be SATA, and I suspect CC's is not so the same drive would not fit.

This is what it looks like. There is no clue on the label if it is SATA or PATA.

Hmm, not many big PATA drives for sale.

Am I right in saying this is OLD technology and maybe I would be better just saving for a new drive?
