Several American scientists consider sugar to be a health hazard on the level of alcohol and tobacco. Some US states are considering regulations that could make soda significantly more expensive. In Denmark, the chairman of the Diabetes Association supports a tax system that punishes the consumption of sugar. 'The regulations of smoking is an example of how far we can go by regulating our conduct', states Allan Flyvbjerg, chairman.

There have been artificial sugar shortages in America for a year or so.

They tried to replace it with corn syrup and now they are looking at a couple of artificial sweeteners, including a rebranded Aspathame...

It's actually true though. There's a famous study of the effects on the indigenous people of Northern Canada (who previously had had no exposure to sugar products at all) when trade began to bring them together back in the day. The behaviour they exhibited was very similar to that of alcohol addiction.

And, equally, if it is an addicting product then the demand is increasingly inelastic and raising taxation on it will have no benefit to the population, but a sizeable benefit to the coffers of government.

So does that mean that sugar will be forced underground? With dealers offering pure refined Tate & Lyle granulated in easy to carry little bags? :D
