I saw it in 2D because the 3D one was sold out.

I noticed the different glasses though.

Free, yes. I kept the ones from the Avatar screening but there were security measures in place at the Alice in Wonderland screening that wouldn't be out of place in an airport to stop people from taking the specs away with them.
Mine certainly weren't cleaned properly either. I spent the first five minutes sat down cleaning them on my jumper.

The last thing I would want is to get an ear or eye infection from wearing dirty glasses. It doesn't even seem as though you could get yourself a good pair to keep because of the different formats being used and developed.

Glasses added an extra 4€ to the price! But we get to keep them and use them if we go to see another 3D film.

The film itself was fairly good, typical Tim Burton, so if you like Tim Burton, you'll like the film.

The 3D was dreadful. It only seemed to work at certain points and my eyes were incredibly sore after the first half hour or so. My girlfriend felt faint and sick at the beginning, but it settled down after that. The glasses were also very uncomfortably to wear, too narrow and the dug into the bridge of my nose; it is also very uncomfortable trying to wear 2 pairs of glasses at the same time.

It was an interesting effect, but I won't be watching another 3D film, until the technology has improved and glasses are no longer required.

I think the whole 3D issue is a fad. I will probably see it in 2D. It was produced in 2D and then retro altered to 3D anyway.

One thing that annoyed me about the 3D in this film (I've not seen any others for a comparison) was the way that the focus would be on an actor in the centre field, but in the foreground you'd be looking past someone's out of focus face. It just didn't feel natural, which meant it felt that the 3D was impressing itself upon me more than I'd have liked. It diverted my attention too much - any good effect should be seamless.

3D is undoubtedly the 'big' thing for the moment. I wonder what the costs of producing something in 3D are like compared to the norm. It's also clearly unnecessary for more story driven pieces, but big action stuff will milk it for all it's worth, I'm certain.

I'd like to see the film again in 2D, tbh.

I thought there was a mention of different formats/glasses, although I imagine they would be the same for the cinema rather than the film. As long as you don't move again you should be fine.

There are at least 4 standards, IMAX 3D, Real3D, Dolby 3D and one other. But the cinemas need to set themselves up with special projectors etc. so they tend to go with one standard, which means that, in theory, you can keep the glasses and only have to pay the extra once.

In America, however, some Real3D cinemas charge for the glasses, then collect them back at the end of the show for recycling... I guess they are quickly washed off and sold to the next customer.

The screening I was at was Dolby 3D - glasses were handed in at the end. Which is cool with me, I'd rather they were reused than sitting at home or in my car not being used. Kind of wasteful. Mine were clean, the girl at the booth had been sitting polishing them with sterilising spray.

Disney 3-D is just an advertising line, ot a standard as such, according to Wikki this is out in Real-D, so I wonder if they have both Dolby 3D and Real-D versions, could explain why some people loved the 3D and others not.
I know this wasn't filmed directly in 3D as Avatar was, Burton filmed his characters infront of green screen and then added the backgrounds and 3D in post production. This may be the issue with a less than satisfactory 3D experience.
I haven't been to see it yet myself as I have only just got back from Italy, but will be taking the wife on Wednesday, as our multiplex normally shows Real-D I shall have to investigate

I think you'll find that if you ask about 3D here, or even the cinema generally, it's probably a no. Just get the DVD (and definitely not the Blu-Ray).
