It's an attitude you see a lot in parents. They are often very selfish when it comes to their own children, while showing callous disregard to everyone else.
From their perspective, reporting the perp to the police achieves nothing. It wont undo the abuse. Taking the money can at least smooth over a lot of other problems and make the kid more comfortable.
It's exactly the same attitude shown by the Chelsea Tractor brigade. Basically, FU - I'm OK.
