A controversial TV documentary is to be screened in France which shows people who think they are taking part in a game show, administering what they believe are near-lethal electric shocks to their rival contestants.

There are certain people in the world, (or the office, take your pick) who I would shock for free. Hell, I'd pay for the chance!

It’s an interesting one - but is it as stringent as the Milgram experiment?

It’s on the TV set, and as such people either don’t care, or are aware that it can’t be real. I think the Milgram experiment is pretty well known now, so we have to factor in caution now.

I can't say I'm surprised really, you only have to look at the people on tamer reality programmes to realise some of them would do damn near anything 'because it's TV'

I think there are a lot more people who are unaware of the experiment than you would think.

I couldn't think of the name of it and asked around the office and no one here had even heard of it.

Whilst it does add extras to the experiment, the concept is still the same. (Although this adds personal greed/desire to win into it also).

The original experiment was essentially "how much would you be prepared to hurt another person purely because someone in authority is telling you to do so".

The authority here is the presenter and the TV studio.

I know the experiment was originally done in the 60/70s, at a time when authority figures were a lot more respected than they are now. I originally imagined fewer people than the original 60% or so would go ahead this time to the maximum. But I immediately realised that people are selfish and have less respect for their fellow man, so I'd imagine the figure would now be in the 80% region.

Just out of curiosity, how is this going to work as a gameshow? I'd imagine fairly early on, people would realise the other people weren't getting shocked.

The game show bit was a spoof (just like the guy in the lab coat in the 60s was a spoof).

It looks like it was done primarily as an experiment and only done once.

It is the experiment that they are broadcasting.

I thought the original was in series 1 episode 4.

We are talking about The Simpsons aren't we?
