I had to reread it before - it's actually an external drive they'd like to flog you this time around

Though I guess that the market is for those with full 120 and 160 Gb machines. That does presume that they do not trade them in for new machines. So is the market for external drives that big. For a 250 Gb drive it does seem overpriced.

If not a little more. It might be due to a Microsoft levy?

The question to ask is : Is the price of a 360 arcade + this 250GB drive less than the price of a 250GB 360 Elite? That may have more to do with the pricing level than anything approaching cost of manufacture. They want people to buy bundles, so they will inevitably price things so the component parts cost more to buy separately.

It makes it roughly equal, but missing a game and controller (forza 3 bundle) so I think what you said makes sense.

Yet the 360 + 250gb hdd is still cheaper than the ps3 250gb And you really dont need more space than that, hell 120gb is enough and the price difference is ~£50 inc extra games and controller on the 360

It does depend on the size of the game saves. I have filled drives up, then if you have kids with their own profiles they have their game saves as well. It can add up.

I've never been a fan of the XBOX 360, having to pay a monthly charge for online gaming just doesn't sit right with me. I appreciate peoples love the console for it's gameplay but when are MS going to create a new console? Maybe never, seems they only started turning a profit from it a couple of years ago. (from what I can remember)
