The Merchant banks then used to finance world trade, and with Lloyds insurance being the premier insurance market the two together made sense for all banks wanting to get involved in the funding of world trade to come here.

Key words highlighted. ;)

Which is somewhat to do with my point - we can't just assume that London's a financial epicentre simply because historically it always has been thus it will continue to be so. That's just not the case.

Apropos of nothing, my brother in law was working for Credit Suisse around the time Bush went into Iraq. Allegedly the continuing trading of the US banks in London was one of the levers used to get us to follow suit.

Given the effect the financial markets have recently had on the UK economy, I think a bit of re-adjustment wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.

As to the American help in the Falklands, would this be the 'help' of them refusing to resupply us with the air to air missiles the sea harriers used? Or their refusal to allow us to use US airbases for refueling long range bombers?
And they didn't enter WWII to help us, they entered WWII because the Japanese attacked them. Up until that point they were entirely isolationist. The war had been going on in Europe for two years - Germany had already overrun the whole of mainland Europe and had attacked the UK by air for months, yet the Americans did nothing until somebody did something to them. Those Americans who did come over and fought in the Battle of Britain were labelled as being unpatriotic at home because they were seen to be involving the US in something that was not their concern. And as has been mentioned, the only help they'd sent us up to that point, we had to pay them for. Way over the odds.

I believe the famous statesman Henry Kissinger put it best - 'America has no friends, only interests'.

Ask an official in the Obama administration about the "special relationship" between the United States and the United Kingdom and the response will be at best a roll of the eyes and at worst an unprintable epithet.

To be honest this is a bigger deal with the politicians and media than the general public. They treat us all like terrorists anyway.

I too find the "special relationship" pretty one-sided (bend over Britain!), and scrap that bloody awful extradition treaty too.
