It looked very good, but the story bore no resemblance to the books.

Isnt this set beyond the books i.e. Alice goes back years later?

I am aware of that, but the story itself has very little of the vibes that Carroll wrote. It was making the noises but not speaking the language in that respect. For example, Jabberwocky is the title of the poem - the creature itself was the Jabberwock. You’d know that if you read the books.

It was a generic off the shelf sword and sorcery script with names from the books dropped in. It shows that no one really thought about the original books at all. The film would have worked in a non-Alice in Wonderland setting.

I'm no Alice expert but the Jabberocky poem.....

Quote:
Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! and through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

"And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!"
He chortled in his joy.

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

Beware the Jabberwock (y - creative license lol). Vorpal blade. Slain. I'm no Alice expert, admit I havent read the book, but those lines in the poem is the film right there. Funily enough when I read this a lot of the stuff in the film seems to be *cough* adapted from the poem... frabjous day, bandersnatch, etc.

The books are on my list to be read, honest :D

Jabberwocky was a poem that Alice found in the Looking Glass House, with some of the nonsense words later defined by Humpty Dumpty. No where does the poem (or the book) infer that Alice was (or would be) the hero of the poem (note - the poem is about a male protagonist).

It would be well worth reading The Annotated Alice by Martin Gardner as well as Bryan Talbot’s excellently illustrated Alice in Sunderland which gives some fascinating background to the books, Alice Liddel’s life and family, as well as Charles Dodgson’s (Lewis Carroll’s real name) life. You’ll find Alice in Sunderland in with the graphic novels. It is a massive, hard back, almost academic, comic book.

There was a film made by Terry Gilliam and starring Michael Palin called Jabberwocky. That was based on the poem. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jabberwocky_(film)
