Return of the ninja cat

It’s cat behaviour. I’ve seen it a lot over my life (I’ve had cats forever!) - cat is happy, comfortable, playing and suddenly goes mad and attacks. Most cats I have had have had a safety valve - they have known where the tipping point is and remove themselves from the situation. A couple have turned savage - they have been the strays or the rescue cats who have had a mixed life and have had to rough it at times.

This reaction is one of insecurity. The cat has become so relaxed in your company that they are doing all the things people find endearing - rolling on their backs, letting you rub their chest and tummies (which, for a cat, is a very trusting thing for them to let you do) or anything else they like to do. Then they will suddenly realise the situation, and feel exposed. At this point, the reaction is to feel threatened, and they will want to fight out of the situation. Our current cats know their limits - they were taught as kittens where rough games get too much, and on the whole, they will just go if it gets to this point. I have had bad lacerations from one cat which had lead a rather upsetting life before we got him, and one time he flipped, didn’t have the safety checks in place and started on my arm. He then realised what he had done and ran away and hid.

Cats need to be treated with respect, and you just need to know what the behaviour means and you will get on with them far better.

My brother's cat (he is 14 so it's kind of my dad's and step mum's cat) is very nervous around people. Especially my dad as he tends to tease her.

Sometimes she'll be sat on a bed or something and I go in to the room and she bolts for the door other times I can sit down next to her and start stroking her. Then suddenly she'll look up and act all scared and run off again.

That sounds about right. If you have had a cat from very young and it’s known nothing but kindness, they will stick around for a lot longer, If the cat has had a mixed life (such as a couple of mine in the past have had), this tolerance will be much shorter. I’ve had two cats which have spent a portion of their lives living feral, and while they were very affectionate animals, their fuses were much shorter. You just have to know to read the signals, and possibly even stop yourself before they get too advanced. My advice: watch your cat - learn the body language.
