Dr. is a valid abbreviation, I don't know why Mk. has such grievances. Also do a google search for Dr. and the top suggestion is the BBC Doctor Who page.

Is it always valid? Could you legitimately write "I went to see the Dr. ?" Isn't Dr. an abbreviation only when used as a title?  _________________A Mac user

The Show is called Doctor Who.
The Doctor has companions, not assistants.
