In France, they have "Red Days" where the electric is so expensive you can't afford to heat with it. These days are those with the highest demand, ie the coldest days of the year. In a bad winter, every other day is a red day.

Thankfully, my friends there have a wood burning stove to huddle around on such days.

You might ask "why do your friends have electric heating?" - well I'll tell you. It was because of a French government incentive to encourage electric heat-pumps to use all that lovely cheap nuclear power. Now no bugger that installed them can afford to run them at Christmas...

It's ironic. I'm with French Electric just like my parents, but my power is sometimes cheaper than theirs

On a red day, electric is expensive per unit. If you don't listen, you go broke

December last year:

I've lived in france for a long time (lol) and electricity bill there has never been anywhere near what we pay in the UK. also EDF is now a private company (grrrr) but the government still limit the price inflation of the tariffs every year.

As I said, myself in England, my parents and friends in France are all on EDF.

The facts speak for themselves. They are undeniable. cold day electric is cheaper in England. Look at the website.

That's if you use the Tempo contract, get a flat rate contract and reduce your consumption overall and it'll be incredibly cheaper than any british companies

EDF flat rate is 0.12€ pr Kwh when EDF UK flat rate is 16.2p per kWh...

Option Base for EDF in France is more expensive than standard my standard tarriff on EDF UK. They pay €0,1125 while I pay 7p

Not only is the unit price currently higher, but they charge a lot for the standing charge. I have a 40A meter which costs me no standing charge, but if I read this correctly the abonnement annuel is €412,66 over there!!

The UK market is highly obfuscated. A lot of people do pay more than they need to out of ignorance and laziness; a bit like mobile tariffs.

It still doesn't change that for a relatively same sized house in the UK and in France i'm paying way more here because of there stupid pay as you go meters

Once you've moved up the home owning/flat renting scale and you've got a bill in your name it's far cheaper. The key systems are usually installed where there's a probability of bill dodging students renting.

I'm guessing you must be renting? In that case, the landlord is pocketing the difference.

Otherwise, PAYG meters are only used on bad payers who run up debt.

Whatever your situation, you're obviously being screwed. You should not be paying more than 7p / KWhr.

Most people in the UK pay less than their French counterparts.

And don't forget - French Nuclear is heavily subsidised by the French tax payer. The same may be true of the UK, but not on the same scale...

Yes in your personal case I would agree. Though many of us here are labour supporters who feel let down. I am switching vote because I do not like the direction Labour are going and the Tories are no better than they ever were. Personally I think a hung parliament might actually get a few things done. Maybe we could finally get some PR and sensible policies, rather than pandering to the rich.
