The word “soacial” in my mind was polluted in the 1990’s by my time at the DHSS, when people would “go down the social” to pick up their dole, single parent money etc.. The word “social” said in a fairly slack-jawed illiterate sounding kind of way.
So when Microsoft talk about “the social” I am afraid, my mental picture is not one of shiny tech in a happy world. It’s one of miserable, grey-looking people in a manky, poorly lit waiting room waiting for their giros.

I always think of the Working Men's Social Club...

I just do not think that this is a great idea, name is crap as well. All too much of a fad if you ask me. Social networking is still to have any legs as a business model.

Its predecessor is huge in America. This is very much an American device, I think. It certainly never caught on over here - although I think T-Mobile did try it. I think it does exactly what is written on the tin. Nothing more, nothing less. It isn't supposed to be a smartphone. It is a feature phone, which does a set number of tasks easily. It isn't designed for web browsing, it is designed to be cheap and allow its users to send lots of texts and keep their social networking status up to date. That it does well. If you are looking for a phone that does more than that, then this isn't the phone for you.

Social networking might have a sizeable niche market but that still does not mean that these phones will be about in ten years.

MS do seem to be focussing on the American markets with a lot of their hand-held devices. I know of only 2 people who have Zunes in this country, for example, and one is an MVP...

It is not the social networking that sold the previous device. It is a device aimed at teens who text and PTT each other and don't need to browse the internet. The social networking is an addition to the new generation, until now, it hasn't been a selling feature of these phones... This is the forerunner, which the Kin replaces: http://wiki.sidekick.com/
