Well, it crashed on the first page I tried to look at!

Opened google.com and switched to classic view, clicked on the login link and it threw me back to the iPhone home screen! And now it refuses to load anything!

One thing this WILL bring to the fore is Firefox Mobile. If Opera is allowed on the iPhone, then surely other browsers too? Or is Opera’s methodology so different that it doesn’t qualify in that way?

I heard mention that their system of compressing the pages through their own servers was the loophole they foulnd that allowed them to be put in the appstore.

No doubt the loophole will be patched soon or other browsers will start to adopt the same features.

I read that it is because the App itself does not interpret its own code as that is against Apple's rules, the proxy servers do all that work.

Maybe, but if that's the case would an app that just ignored and had no ability to execute javascript be passed, without the need for proxies?

Rebooted iPhone and tried again. Could log in, but the iGoogle page just had "Unsupported Module" in a long list down the page... Not a good start and Google Apps just aren't available.

Edit: Safari shows the iGoogle page properly, with all widgets there.

I downloaded this, and although it's not particularly good looking, the speed of it is remarkable.

I'd prefer it if sites were properly optimised instead.

I'd prefer it if websites actually worked.

Compared with Safari, this is how mobile web browsing was before Apple and Google came onto the scene. It is very retro, which isn't a good thing.

I've just tried using opera mini on this site on my new Android phone. It's unusable! The default browser is fine though.

Which Android phone do you have? You are the first person I know that has one.

I have heard it is very good. The best Android phone yet by most accounts.

Let’s look at a web site I work on.

Functionality Fail:
http://www.softpress.com

In Safrai on an iPhone this works - tapping the tabs under the main image to show. They scroll to show more of an image.

In Opera, this functionality requires a trip to a server, and even then the chances of the right image being displayed is suspect. This code uses the Scriptaculous library, which is pretty robust and cross platform/browser.

I found that it rendered my web page incorrectly too, quite terribly in fact clicky...The site is XHML 1.1 and CSS 2 compliant and has no JavaScript (well OK, some JavaScript generates the year in the footer)...
IMO, this is another hit for Apple. The process of approving applications should surely include some sort of QA?

Have you filled it up with apps yet? :)

Thankfully, my current task is thinking about the iPad - something with more marketing bang than Opera Mini. The fact that what you see in Opera isn’t really your web site, but a processed approximation of it means that there is little hope of controlling the user experience.

Not too many. 3 games and 1 that kills unwanted apps to save the battery life.
