A UK village which raised £37,000 to offer 200 homes the super-fast broadband that BT could not deliver has launched its network.
Rutland Telecom will offer the residents of Lyddington speeds of up to 40Mbps (megabits per second).
Other telecom firms had said it was not economical to provide fast services to the village.

BT said it was "delighted to help Rutland Telecom" although it added that it hoped it would allow other service providers access to its new network.

"Otherwise there is the risk of a local monopoly developing, which is never good for consumers," said BT Group Strategy Director Olivia Garfield.

BT really are an absolute pack of... :x

£37k this cost; I find it hard to believe BT couldn't have made it's money back there in a reasonably short time frame, then CONTINUED to make money :?

£37 000 amongst 200 houses works out at around £185 per house. That is very little and for the house holders it probably adds a lot more to the value of their homes because they have 40 Mbits connections. As the company is owned by the locals they will not get bled dry by the greedy ISP.
