Australian men reclaim child support through DNA tests after law change

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldne ... hange.html

Quote:
Nearly 50 men have won back child support payments totalling A$434,378 (£262,249), with one man recovering A$70,000.
In January, 2007, changes made to the Child Support (Assessment) Act allowed any parent to seek a DNA test to determine the paternity of his or her child.
Support groups hailed the development, saying too many men had been duped by former partners into supporting children who were not theirs.

It would happen here as well.

But Kathleen Swinbourne, president of the Sole Parents Union, said the new laws were damaging children at the centre of such DNA disputes: "What does this say to children about being wanted, being loved, being parented?"

i.e. Just shut up and pay for the child, no questions asked :x No mention of fidelity there, or being brought up by the natural father.

Mothers are never to blame, no matter what they do it seems.

Very true. However isn't the point here that these are 'fathers' who are separated from the mothers and were forced to pay child maintenance because the mothers told the relevant authorities that they were the father of the child, when that was actually not true. Or have I read it wrong? These men were not the biological father nor were they ever likely to be the 'emotional' father. Their only involvement with the child was being legally forced to pay the bills. For a child they essentially had no responsibility at all for. All presumably on the word of the mother of the child..

I have no objection at all to legal requirement to maintain a child you are the parent of. I have some argument with the implementation in the UK but the general principle seems fine to me. However, there have been enough legal screwups over this (let alone the possibility of actual misrepresentation) that if I was required to pay for a child that was outwith my current relationship and that I was not previously aware of, you can be certain I'd demand a paternity test first...

True but if you were not the biological dad then you would be annoyed at having to pay for the privilege.

+1 even if the paternity is not disputed. It would save costs in future as no need for court cases to make returns of child support.
