 | | | | Quote: Ubisoft has announced an 'environmental initiative' to eliminate paper game manuals included with its games.
Starting with the worldwide launch of Shaun White Skateboarding this autumn, the publisher will replace all physical game manuals with in-game digital equivalents on PS3 and 360.
Ubisoft says including game manuals directly in games will offer players "easier and more intuitive access to game information," as well as allowing itself to provide gamers with "a more robust manual".
Ubisoft reckons that producing one ton of paper used in its game manuals consumes an average of two tons of wood from 13 trees, with a net energy of 28 million BTU's, greenhouse gases equivalent of over 6,000 lbs of CO2, and wastewater of almost 15,000 gallons.
In addition, Ubisoft has partnered with Technimark, Inc. to release "the industry's most environmentally-responsible DVD case" for all of its future PC titles in North America, it says, starting with Splinter Cell Conviction on PC on April 30.
"Ubisoft is often recognized for making great games, but it's a special privilege to be the industry leader at saving trees," said Laurent Detoc, president of Ubisoft North America.
"Eco-friendly initiatives are important to the global community and introducing in-game digital manuals on Xbox 360 and PS3 is just the latest example of Ubisoft's ongoing commitment to being a more environmentally conscious company." | | | | |
http://www.computerandvideogames.com/ar ... ?id=243376I think he means 'saving money', as opposed to 'saving trees'... Maybe it's just me, but with games getting ever more complicated, I'm finding manuals to be more useful than ever for both instruction and characters/plot And it's not like the old days where you only had about four buttons; two if you're going back even further All said, I'm sure many manuals aren't even opened

With my memory I cannot finish many games without a manual. Bad idea if you ask me.

That's just age my friend, that's just age. Mind you the X3:Terran Conflict Manual is the size of a small novel.

You've made me worry now about what I'll do when I start losing mobility in my mouse trigger finger... Hopefully by then the mind controllers will be far more advanced.

If your brain is starting to slow now, how good are these controllers gonna need to be?

Plus the kids will have them as well so you will still be at a huge disadvantage.

I remember the biggest manualI ever got was with EF2000. Made in 1995 and thr amount of in-depth knowledge was amazing. It covered things like the statistics of the plane, each of its systems, each of the missiles it used (what they were, how they worked, best one to use etc) but also things like the characterisyica of friendly planes like F16 and enemy planes like the SU35. It also covered how to approach various types of missions. The entire thing ran into over 300 pages!!!
For something like a flightsim, I would prefer a paper manual. For almost any game, a quick help guide is more than enough. The single thing for me is what the button configuration.

they might cut out producing manuals but everyone who buys a game prints out their own copy either from a PDF or from compiled tips on the web. End result is that no trees saved overall but Ubisoft make bigger profits because they cuts some costs in the name of the environment.

I rarely use the manual when playing a new game. I do like to refer back to it though when I pick up a game I havent played for months. If I dont do this I tend to run around maps reloading rather than stabbing, etc
