The number of accidents on roads next to Swindon's shrouded speed cameras is the same now as when they were active, according to council figures.

I must admit it is very strange driving around Swindon and seeing all the cameras with bags over their heads.

Great result though :D

IIRC isn't there a town in Canada where they have no road furniture whatsoever, yet their accident rate is no different to anywhere else..

Ashford has shared space scheme, where pedestrians, cyclists and motorists all have equal precedence.

By all accounts, it's working a treat.

I can't make up my mind about speed cameras.

Sure, they're annoying - but I'm less likely to get a ticket from a static camera than a mobile one, because I know where the static ones are.

:?

I think there's also a place in Holland, absolutely no signs or cameras whatsoever, and their accident rate is below the average. It's all down to making drivers and pedestrians concentrate more.

jonbwfc I was behind her in a queue today - but I wouldn't describe it as 'bushy'.

I like the look of that.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

I've driven with a few people who have those detectors, and they seem to give a lot of false positives???

TBH I never go fast on roads that I'm new to or if I can't see the road ahead. Or if the conditions aren't right.

Yes but a false positive is better than a speeding ticket and points. :D

Though the false positives are possibly because of mobile camera locations that are not in use.

Generally false positives are other sensors of various types. There is a huge difference in reaction when you are actively ( or the scan is in your direction ) scanned though.

In Notts they have a habit of setting up mobile speed cameras on Sundays at the bottom of hills. Now I'm not saying people arent responsible for the speed at which their car is travelling but if there is a time when you might accidentally creep over the limit I'm guessing its likely to be on a quiet Sunday road, going downhill. This IMO serves no purpose other than to make money. There's no school, no Sunday market nearby, no shopping/pedestrian area, etc etc.

There is a speed camera in Brighton which sets off a false positive because it is under a flyover. Then another in one of the suburbs on a steep hill, and unless you apply your breaks you will be going over the speed limit of 30 at that point.

speed cameras are not prevention, they're only finance related.

To make people slow down you just design the road so they have no other choice. especially in town. You can use trees and bushes to block vision until intersections, paint, parking spaces and people will feel obliged to slow down.
