I was very aware of my size as a kid (now I'm just fat  ); if I hadn't been smacked as a kid I'd have run riot

got a lad whos nearly 8 and a 15month old daughter, have never physically punished either of them ever

at the end of the day to me its just confirming to a kid that its ok to use violence to solve a issue and that can stay ingrained and takes a hell of a lot of "deprogramming" to get rid of that mentality, trust me im no hippy or pot head, quite the opposite, exarmy, doorman etc and have seen enough of violence being used to solve a problem.

but also where do you stop................... ive seen parents really laying into kids in public places and hear the excuse its my right to do so

As a father of 2 boys 4 & 7 I use smacking as a punishment where it is warranted.

I would also say that my children are far far better behaved than most of their friends, especially those whose parents don't smack.

Unfortunately, once again, we are being reduced to lowest common denominator law making - because 1 or 2 parents abuse their rights it gets banned outright.

TBH I feel terrible when I have smacked the kids, I REALLY don't like to do it - but there are times when it really is the only sensible course of action.

The state should only step in where the level of force becomes unreasonable .. .. and is likely to cause permanent damage or unnecessary suffering to a child.

In my view, much of the lack of control in classrooms and society in general is due to the balance of power shifting from adults to children - it is not acceptable and not fair to those children who do behave well.

Seriously, I don't smack my kids, a strong word or raised voice invariably has the desired effect; but I reserve the right to smack them, if and when I think it is required, and bollox to anyone who thinks less of me because of it.

Euro-interference gets right up my bloody nose, I'd like to smack them.

My personal experience of "smacking" is that it breeds an underlying resentment, leading to vindictive and underhanded behaviour and a very bitter childhood.

That said, when a kid (or adult for that matter) simply refuses to listen to reason and becomes a danger to themselves and others, I don't know what else you're supposed to do apart from smack them outside the head. There have been many times I've desperately wanted to violently discipline stupid selfish little barstuds, but I've always refrained.

I guess the logical and humane option to is simply have badly behaved people put down.

I was smacked only a couple of times as a last resort. It was good for me in terms of being brought up as a human being rather than some [lifted] animal like a fair fraction of kids nowadays.

Kids have always acted up and been boisterous. But when their parents exert proper authority at least the kids know that, when they behave badly, what they are doing is wrong.

How about another side of the coin, I was beaten as a child and into my teens by my parents. What started as smacking turned into something entirely different, I was not unruly, I was a child getting dirty, coming home a little late, broke a vase etc. Until my early teens I thought this was normal, society deems it OK to smack your kids, if this was not the case I would have realised a lot earlier, I may have tried to speak out.

In my opinion, find another way, there are plenty other methods of (not sure what you'd phrase it as, punishment)

Stay out in the Dune Sea all by yourself for several decades and you start to forget that you're only supposed to use your power for knowledge and defence. Sorry bro.

I would, generally agree. I remember getting the belt, not the best memories.

However, I would agree with it in instances say where a child is trying to put their hand in a fire. You can't reason with really young kids so a conditional tap on the legs to get their attention (not a beating) would be more preferable than a child on fire.

But I would say used for conditioning, not punishment.
