I assume that applies to all parties and not just the Tories.

Anyhoo a Labour canvasser knocked on the door on Sunday morning at about 9.30. Just ignored them.

Best Beloved summed it up. Essentially, Brown's guilty of getting caught. I'm willing to bet similar things have been said in private by all the politicians, and it won't be the last time someone gets caught out.

I understand that the term 'bigot' my not have been used inaccurately. In which case, yes, he's only guilty of being caught. I may not have been quite so polite about her.

My local Raving Loony candidates policies:

Quote:
I will be standing as Parliamentary Candidate for the New Constituency of Mid Derbyshire, below are some of my proposed proposals.

1. Health & Safety: We propose to ban Self Responsibilty on the grounds that it may be dangerous to your health.

2. M.P's Expenses: We propose that instead of a second home allowance M.P's will have a caravan which will be parked outside the Houses of Parliament. This will make it easier as flipping a caravan is easier than flipping homes

3. Eurofit: The European Constitution which will be sorted out by going for a long Walk. "As everyone knows that walking is good for the constitution"

4. The speaker in the House of Commons will be replaced by the latest audio equipment

5. To help the Israel/Palestinian Problem, we will get rid of the old road map, and replace it with a new sat nav instead

6. European Union: It is proposed that the European Union end its discrimination by creating a "Court of Human Lefts" because their present policy is one -sided.

7. Education: We will increase the number of Women teachers throughout the education System as we are strong believers of 'Female Intuition'

8. Immigration and Population: I propose that we cap the population of this country. We have too many people for such a small country, so we will Cap the number of people residing here at present rates (approximately 63 million, give or take 10 mill ) on the basis of one out, one in (excluding Births).

Regarding Immigration... Any Person who can prove that they or their descendants emigrated to the U.K before 55 A.D can stay. All the others will be repatriated to their original country. (Well we have to draw the line somewhere)

9. We will ban all forms of Greyhound racing. This will help stop the counrty going to the dogs.

10. Afghanistan, Iraq and the War on terror. Theirs nothing funny about this. however as we have not found any taliban terrorists in Derbyshire. Our Soldiers can all come home now.

I think he's been unlucky - but I only felt a little bit bad for him when I saw how he reacted as the tape was played back to him during a radio interview.

I don't know if he knew he was being recorded on video too or not, but as the recording was played to him he sat there, holding his head in his hand.

Interesting that no-one so far has raised in this campaign the issue of Big State and Big Brother. I want to know what the Tories and Lib-Dems will be doing about rolling back the authoritarian legislation brought in by Labour. (I assume Labour will want to maintain the onward march of Big Brother into our lives.)

I have in a roundabout way. I can't remember exactly what I said a couple of pages back, but it included this as it's one of my biggest concerns. I'm not sure if anyone will (or will be able to roll it back) in the short term. But with the Conservatives usually being the party of small government, I'm sure that would be one of their intentions.

Quote:
restoring your freedoms

Liberal Democrats believe it is an individual's right to live as they see fit, without discrimination, with personal privacy, and with equal rights before the law.

Decades of Labour and Conservative rule have overthrown some of the basic principles of British justice and turned Britain into a surveillance state.

Liberal Democrats will protect and restore your freedoms. We will:
  • Introduce a Freedom Bill. We will regulate CCTV, stop councils from spying on people, stop unfair extradition to the US, defend trial by jury, and stop children being fingerprinted without their parents' permission.
  • Restore the right to protest by reforming the Public Order Act to safeguard non-violent protest even if it offends; and restrict the scope of injunctions issued by vested interests.
  • Protect free speech, investigative journalism and academic peer-reviewed publishing through reform of the English and Welsh libel laws - including by requiring corporations to show damage and prove malice or recklessness, and by providing a robust responsible journalism defence.
  • Scrap intrusive Identity Cards and have more police instead, and also scrap plans for expensive, unnecessary new passports with additional biometric data
  • Halt the increase in unnecessary new offences with the creation of a 'stop unit' in the Cabinet Office. Every department in Whitehall would have to convince this unit of the need for a new offence.
  • End plans to store your email and internet records without good cause.
  • Remove innocent people from the police DNA database and stop storing DNA from innocent people and children in the future, too.
  • Ensure that everyone has the same protections under the law by protecting the Human Rights Act.
  • Scrap the intrusive ContactPoint database which is intended to hold the details of every child in England.

We believe that the best way to combat terrorism is to prosecute terrorists, not give away hard-won British freedoms. That is why we will:

  • Reach out to the communities most at risk of radicalisation to improve the relationships between them and the police and increase the flow of intelligence.
  • Scrap control orders, which can use secret evidence to place people under house arrest.
  • Reduce the maximum period of pre-charge detention to 14 days.
  • Make it easier to prosecute and convict terrorists by allowing intercept evidence in court and by making greater use of post-charge questioning.

From pages 93-95 of the LibDem manifesto

HTH ;)

It does. I can never be bothered to read actual manifestos, as they tend to be a work of fiction in the end.

My voting decision has been reinforced.

How on earth could you enforce that. If what they say is factually correct then its correct it might be negative but its still true. If the message is knowingly false then an enforce retraction yes but banning?
What's positive from one viewpoint is negative from another.
All parties are dong negative campaigning, it works. It helps drive core supporters who might stay at home to actually vote.

Just listened to the clips and this is a moment that is probably ensuring that the knives will go out on Gorden, regardless of the election result.

It would be nice if the party broadcasts focused on each manifesto rather than negative campaining. Tell us what you are going to do, don't complain about the opposition and probably do the same thing anyway.

And if they go negative then you lose your party election broadcasts.
