I love doing long exposure stuff. B&W make a 10-stop filter, ideal for taking 3 minute exposures in broad daylight. You can get some crazy effects with them, especially if you head into an urban area, a high street etc. They're pricey for wide lenses (77mm), but on a stock 18-55mm with a 52mm thread it's only £35!
Beaches are good fun though, but difficult if you have an onshore breeze! You have to watch the spray on the lens.
My photo comp entry last month was an 8 second exposure with a ND4 filter (a cheap one!) required to get the exposure I wanted. It was a bit trial and error but I really enjoyed the process. I'd just like to invest in a sturdier tripod now, as the one I've got isn't great, and practice the method some more.
I also had to use the timer on the camera as pressing the shutter release is likely to cause some camera movement and I dont have a wired remote. I once bought a cheap wireless one on eBay that did the job but the batteries ran out!
