Just got an email through today, saying I've been invited to beta test the OSX version of Steam! Result!

It looks and works exactly the same as the Windows version. I'll get some screenshots up later as I haven't got enough time to do so yet.

Congratulations!

As a beta tester, presumably you've signed some form of non-disclosure agreement? Or is it a public beta?

I ask, as I'm a beta tester for a couple of software companies, and I'm not allowed to discuss it outside the beta lists, or even reveal which software I am testing.

It's a closed public beta if you get me. People who signed up to test it are the only people allowed to use it at this stage. But when it comes on open beta next week, then everyone can use it.

I can't remember signing a NDA, so I should be ok. :)

I guess you're okay then. Have fun, and don't forget to be clear in your bug reporting!

Two weeks to 'go live' apparently This is both good and bad - good because that means chances are it's pretty much 100% working already, bad because you won't get a lot of time to muck around before everybody else piles in :).

Add me as a friend if you like (jonbwfc, suprisingly), you'll be able to see if I'm online and what I'm playing which will be a good part of the test. I'm not a beta tester BTW, but I have steam on the bootcamp partition at home :).

Couldn't you just find some shots of the windows version then  . Actually, does it look the same as the 'new' steam windows client they launched a week or so ago?

Yup, looks just like the Windows version. I'm very jealous and also curious how well Half life 2 will work on a Magic Mouse... ;)

For certain games apparently yes. Valve said when they first announced Steam for Mac that for Valve games if you bought the PC version you'd get a free copy of the Mac version. I suspect for other publishers where there are two versions, it's up to them whether they offer the same deal or not.

All of the games released by Valve themselves on the Source engine - Half life 2, Episode 1 & 2, Team Fortress 2, Portal, Counterstrike, Day of Defeat, Left for Dead etc. The Source engine will now output Windows and Mac binaries at the same time - plus you can play on the same VAC servers for cross-platform Team Fortress 2...:)
