I like the Lib Dems like the next man - loveable, cuddly, almost family friendly politics. They have been the most communicative in my area - they clearly love taking axes to trees, and their last message has been interesting.

Firstly, it came in a hand written envelope. My name was actually written by someone, not a machine. It contained a letter, which is supposed to be handwritten, BUT is clearly a computer font:



Now, this looks great, but it’s written in a form of lettering which I would class as “the neat writing of the illiterate”. The underlining looks mechanical. Sadly, it makes them look like retards.

It is a very hideous font!

The problem here is that it is possible to vary letter shapes (glyphs). There are double letters in that text which don’t look natural because they are identical. Some font formats are capable of changing the shape of glyphs depending on the combination typed. So the word “green” looks unnatural because the double “e” is not as one would write it. Using the OpenType format would allow the designer of the font to make a special “ee” glyph. I am just sensitive to this - the aim is for the letter to be casual and handwritten. The reality is that they would have done better if they had used Times New Roman and signed by hand.

I agree, Paul. They should have engaged a professional to create the letter for them. Any fule no that OpenType is the way to go for handlettered typefaces.

I got one of them, apparently from a frail pensioner but actually from labour party HQ. So did all the people in my street. While I knew what the deal was, I spent the bank holiday trying to convince my neighbours that the Labour party had an old man chained to a desk .

The letter should have been individually addressed as well.

It was. The envelope had our names and address handwritten on it. You will not be surprised to learn that the handwriting on the envelope did not match the font of the letter.

You can do some quite clever things with OpenType if you can be bothered. OpenType can help you recall previously unused glyphs from the past which were lost to the Typewriter Generation.

I like Caflisch Script Pro. It's a useful hand script face, with plenty of alternate glyphs for each letter.

tbh, it's more effort than any party has put in to get our vote. English National Party sent us a leaflet but that's it. Possibly because our vote is only worth 0.02% to any of them

Round here, the LibDems have sent out leaflets almost every other day. What none of the parties have done is any canvassing.

We've had canvassing but I'm not interested, I know who I'll vote for from my own research and don't really think that my opinion would really be noted.

As for leaflets, well due to a move I had only just registered in time, and so yesterday I received directed mail from Liberals and Labour. According to everything I can find there are only 474 votes between them (based on a boundary change), and the household has also received something from the Conservatives saying that they are neck and neck with Labour with the Liberals only having half of the votes of each of them. Another fancy use of statistics.

I've just received the same, although it looks more like a copy of a copy of a copy.
