If Labour, who have first dibs, can't form a coaltion (that would need just about everybody) then the Conservatives may have an opportunity to form a minority Government.

That would mean there would have to be a time limt before another election, less than a year, at the end of which they would be even less likely to get a majority as they plan to instigate wide cuts. How they would cut in NI if they get the Unionists on board I don't know.

There is no requirement for another election within a year if one party forms a minority government - if could run its full term - although highly unlikely.

Just sat and worked out what results would have been under PR system i.e 634 (declared) seats divided by those voted.

Ignoring Northern Ireland for a minute the results would be approx:-

235 Conservative
189 Labour
149 Lib Democrats
20 UKIP
12 BNP
11 SNP
6 Green
3 Plaid Gymru
1 English Democrats

Interestingly, Gordon Brown's speech outside Downing Street seems to be very much saying that he won't take first dibs on trying to form a government.

He's also stated that he would pretty much give the Lib Dems proportional representation.

Very, very interesting speech. Just watched it. That'll give Dave something to talk about in 30 minutes.

I watched it too. There are some speeches he makes that I like - and that was one of them. It seemed well thought out and well spoken. Other times he seems far less composed and collected.

Cameron’s speech coming up soon.

Surprising. Cameron making a comprehensive open offer to the LibDems.

Clegg stands by his word that the party with the highest % of the vote should get first dibs.

OOhhh, blimey, Cameron talking about electoral reform.

He mentioned change but unless I misheard he was still behind first past the post. :?

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Aye, I think the Tory idea is just restructuring all of the constituencies so they're all of equal size. I guess it needs a bit of a chit chat.

Just fiddle the boundaries so that another election will be pro-conservative. :x

Clegg will have to stand his ground on many issues if he wants the party to retain any credibility.

Cable as Chancellor rather than halfwit Osborne would be favoured by the City as well. Osborne can sit in the background with his crayons.

Apologies for poo pooing the idea of Tory-LibDem coalition, I should learn not to listen to politicians. :D

I don't think the Tory members will be happy about this, apparently they wanted the campaign to be run in a completely different matter but the hierarchy said no, they have a better idea... lol.

Thats why they have the boundary commision to try and avoid those accusations. Though each time they make a decision the party or parties that fell hard done by claim that its being changed to suite another party.

Although to be fair Labour were already down in seats after the last boundary changes...

It may be wise for Clegg to go with whoever will bring in decent electoral reform soonest. Once it has been done break the coalition to force another election and rake in more seats.

Nick Robinson's on it. Could be a good call to hang back and let somebody else hang themselves. Then move in at the next general election. Give Dave enough rope and you could be on a winner.
