Having no experience of NAS can you recommend anything.

I want something which can:

Attach to my router and allow me to log in to access data from anywhere with a secure password.
Comes with a minimum of 1TB with space to add extra disks.

Bonus:
If it could attach to the router through wireless.
If it could plug into a TV through HDMI.

Any recommendations?

Not really, the cheaper the better as long as it will do what I want.

If it costs £150 it costs £150 if it costs £1500 (well maybe not that much) it costs £1500. Its a (relatively) long term investment.

Wireless is too slow for 1080p HD stuff

If it plugs in to a TV it's a media player not a NAS

HP Mediasmart WHS EX490 http://www.hp.com/united-states/campaig ... index.html
+ Xbox 360 or Windows Based PC with HDMI out i.e. http://www1.euro.dell.com/uk/en/home/De ... hs1&~ck=mn

I have this setup at home and it works a treat. (although I did upgrade the processor in the EX490 and install Windows Server 2008 R2)

The mediasmart looks interesting, may look into that one.

Like I say both of those things would be a bonus not a necessity. If it did not have that I would just take the film from the NAS and play it from the laptop via HDMI to the TV.

That would be my suggestion

Or a home made home server/htpc combo with network access
