3 hours by car might be 120 miles a day? That's 30,000 extra miles a year or about £1000 in fuel plus three services, new tyres and depreciation. You'd need £2K a year extra just to break even.

I would agree with this entirely. I had a job which mean that I had to travel to HQ twice a week - a total journey of over 300 miles a week. Unless you are going to get travel costs, you have the following to consider:

• Increase in costs - fuel, wear & tear on the car, increase in its depreciation

• Possible increase in insurance - you annual mileage will go up, and this may bump your premium

• Health - I found the commute tiring - in fact since I was self employed, and still working for the same outfit, I seem much fitter and healthier because the need to do a regular commute is not there any more. I love driving, but 3 hours a day every day? Not for me, I’m afraid.

Unless the package was well worth the extra impact on you and your car, I’d pass on it.

I had a job with a three hour daily commute.

I enjoyed the job, but after a year or so the commute began wear me out. In hindsight, the extra benefits of the job didn't come anywhere near covering the extra hours away from home.

If it doesn't offer a hefty salary increase as a minimum, I wouldn't touch it.

Happily, my commute is now about 30 minutes per day. (depending on tractors)

Although that wasn't strictly a rhetorical question John, it was a rather succinct attempt to say don't bother and a challenge to really think about any possible pros. The op was quite happy before, but here comes capitalism to tempt you. It's rarely worth it for such positions, but now we have two pages of people saying roughly equivocal things to me, but in much longer posts.

I can't argue with that, but there are a couple of things to bear in mind. Whilst Caz is obviously happy where she is we, (or more specifically I, because you guys may have read something that I missed) don't know what the career prospects are in her current job, or whether she is looking to "climb the ladder" or is perfectly happy in the role she has.

I said a couple of things, but whilst typing the last sentence I have forgotten what the other, (fascinating) point that I wanted to make was, so I'll leave it at that for now...

I could be entirely wrong, and I'm happy to be corrected. However, Caz seems to me to be generally happy in life. She has always said how much she likes her work and although she has the usual office-based frustrations it's generally pretty good. She also comes across as somebody who's consistently happy on a personal basis.

Given this assessment, I assumed that with it being a "supervisory" position, rather than a significant bump/change, it's not her interest, but she's looking to us for a second opinion.

Like I said, I could be completely wrong, as my people reading skills are way less effective on this forum than in real life, but that's my analysis of the situation.

I was thinking about it as I think you should consider every opportunity in life and I guess I wanted someone else to say 'It's OK to pass up an opportunity if you are happy the way things are' which you all have done so thank you
The longer I spend working at Discovery HQ the more I realise how special the 'family' atmosphere is where I usually work and how much more attention I can give to people where as at HQ people don't even know who people are outside their own departments. I'm also in charge of everything in my normal job so don'\t really have to rely on other people to get things done whereas here there is a lot of people who pass the buck claiming 'it's not my job' and there's a lot of bitchiness.
