I'm looking for an app that will let me control what song my iPhone is playing from my Mac - anyone know of such an app?

Google isn't helping much.

I'm struggling to come up with a need to do this?

Surely you can just listen to the music from your Mac?

Well if you have your iPod/iPhone in a dock with better speakers than your Mac then I can see a use there.

Well it's basically like using AirTunes with an AirportExpress (like I also do), but the phone takes the place of the AirportExpress.

It's very useful indeed. For example, sat on the sofa in the lounge with your iPhone hooked into your stereo across the room. If you had this app, you could change the track from the sofa, just like you can with an AirportExpress - the only difference is that with the Airport, what ever is playing on your computer's iTunes is sent over the network, and played through the speakers connected to the AirportExpress. With this app, you would just control what track the iPhone is playing, not send it music to play.

See what I mean?

Perhaps you should write it, stick it on the app store, then trouser lots of money?

If I knew Objective-C then I would give it a go, but I don't. :(

Having said that - I do know the basics of C, and a fair bit of Java, so it probably wouldn't be unachievable to use it as a learning project.

I'm not sure how you'd go about it. I'm not sure the architectures allow it.

I was thinking about that too.

You could poss write a program to use instead of iTunes but then that's a PITA.

You'd have to write the MP3 player from the ground up to work with the "desktop" part of the software over wifi and the various docks.

CLICKY

If it was free to develop, I would definitely give this a go in June - I've got a month off before I start work in July.

I can't/don't want to afford to pay for it though. :(

Okay, yes, so we're going with the method outlined by Mr Foggin with having to write both the remote and the media player, even if the media player is a fairly trivial skin.

Well of course you are going to have to write both ends. If the iPod app had the functionality built in, then this whole exercise wouldn't be necessary???? Or have I missed your point?

The iPhone end doesn't have to be complicated though - just accept a query and return the response after passing it through the media query object. UI wise, it would all be on the Mac, not the phone.
