Yes but in my situation the effort and costs involved would simply not be worth it.

</argument> ?

Personally I've nothing against the fag lighter in my car since it powers a 240v inverter that lives in my footwell. My phone can charge off the laptop, charging off the inverter. Win! :-)

I think the issue is that fag lighters fit quite snugly in the socket, yet everything else for GPS and phones etc. wobble around like crazy. As smokers have lighters then why not replace the car fag lighter with a USB sockets. You could easily fit in a couple in the same space and why shouldn't one be connected up as an input to the head unit?

Mine's got 2 (although I think 1 is called a electrical outlet)

I'm all for ditching the 12v cigar lighters only issue is that USB is 5V 500mA so you need to have a transformer in behind the dash somewhere to supply 5V.

That makes it expensive to get at or repair if there are any issues, meanwhile cigar lighter sockets are directly wired to 12V from the battery and any transformation is dealt with by easy to replace/inexpensive adaptors.

think there is a better case for hiding the outlets in the passenger foot well or something though. the central console shouldn't be getting al fouled up with wires etc.
