Obvious, when you think of it, but I learned today that there's always a standby rescue mission Space Shuttle flight scheduled for every main mission. This is in case a Shuttle is damaged during the launch, or receives damage in orbit, which would be sufficient to prevent it re-entering safely.
So, although Atlantis is landing today, ending its last mission flight (STS-132), it is scheduled as rescue mission standby STS-335 for STS-134 Endeavour. STS-134 is scheduled to be the actual last Shuttle mission of the programme started in 1981, and should fly in November this year.

With the contract awarded in 1946, and a production of 746 between 1952–1962, the B52 Stratofortress is not due to be retired until 2040.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

The majority of the fleet are older than the crews that fly them, by a considerable margin.

When making 240 vodka jelly shots.... EXPECT stains on surfaces from where the jelly has dribbled when pouring, then stained

That sounds like something where the learning process is really rather unpleasant.

Not something I learned today, I learned it yesterday, but upon discovering it I did think about posting it in this thread. Increased stress leads to increased amounts of ear wax.
