http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstop ... arket.html | | | | Quote: In a damning indictment of modern television, John Cleese last night rounded on the "hard-headed businessmen" who he blamed for the declining standards in the industry. "From the fifties, right through to the late eighties, the good people of Britain – and some of the others – were able to enjoy the least bad television in the world," said the 70-year-old star of Fawlty Towers, Monty Python's Flying Circus and The Frost Report. "During these glorious days, the word 'quality' was still to be heard in planning meetings. This era came to a stumbling halt when ITV was handed over to hard-headed businessmen, and the BBC decided it was their duty to follow them downmarket." In a message that was read out at last night's Media Society dinner at the Landmark Hotel in London to honour his old friend Lord Bragg, Cleese added that, as someone who was lucky enough to work in British television during this "happy time", he felt Bragg epitomised the golden age of television. | | | | |
I agree with him, too much is based on getting ratings that appeal to the lowest common denominator.

I agree in some sense, how much TV is worth watching at the minute?
I posted a link earlier in TRST about how my lecturer was on BBC Radio Wales earlier saying that he hadn't owned a TV in 15 years. TBH, in the last 15 years, what has he really missed?
Compare the total time a really good series is on TV for (Between 10 - 20 hours per season over a few weeks?) with the amount of time TV is being broadcast (24 hours * 100 channels = 2400 hours a day) and you really aren't missing much.
I can see TV in a few years being a lot more on demand, with a mechanism to stream content over a dedicated line to a dedicated box. This service would also include a download service which means you effectively buy the content (much like iTunes store). I could see there still being channels, but these would be much more a stream of 'random' content which you could tune into if you were bored.

With iPlayer do you really need a TV, you could watch it all that way and without a license. Aside from that I barely watch the TV at the moment. The only thing that I watch is Springwatch, though without Bill Oddie for some reason.

Of course there's a load of tripe on TV but I've seen programs that have opened me up to a world I wouldnt have seen otherwise. Obviously I'm not referring to Celebrity Britain's Got The Dancing Factor On Ice but some of the recent (BBC) documentaries over the last few years have been amazing.

+1 There's plenty of roses there if you can find them among the weeds.

I'm down to HIGNFY, The Blame Game (NI show), that rock band thing on BBC2 (soon to end), Charlie Brooker (no idea what way Four are running that ) and the sort of shows on specific things like design (war machines!) and application (Hammond's shows etc).

I think I'd only add the odd sporting event and QI to that list.

I'd forgotten QI was back soon (or it should be). TG too, though if it comes back the way the last series was, I'm done

QI is excellant. Though the basic premise that the BBC and ITV are chasing ratings has increased the dross content considerably. How long has it been since ITV have done a decent drama? Only one I can think of is Doc Martin.

The only one I've ever watched recently is The Fixer, though you could also class that as a thriller maybe...
