Hi

Got 2 Macpros here which are totally freezing when using final cut and conversion software (think it was streamclip). It's not allowing force quit and the only way to get the mac going again is to force it to shut down.

I upgraded one last week to 10.6.3, the other machine is still on 10.5. Both the machines are a few years old now so they're thinking it may need new hard drives.

Has anyone else had any problems like this?

Disk Utility should tell you if it's a hard drive problem.
My mate had FCP problems on his MBP, I can ask him what he did to get it running smoothly again if you like?

Right, well you're obviously too slow in responding because I've asked my mate and he sent his reply.
Basically, what he suggests is (avoiding all the manual steps) using the FCP maintenance pack.

I'm not here to be charming. Caz should, hopefully, know me well enough by now.

Depending on how old the machines are, and what setup they are using, it could be the overheating problem. Doing video editing will of course generate lots of heat as the CPU(s) are working hard. Some models with the older Core architecture Xeons had insufficient cooling for the CPU and the ram also overheated.
Particularly when the machine had a better than standard video card and more hard drives.

Weird thing is it's happening on 2 machines. Colleague has said the following file is causing problems in US... library/scripting additions/adobe type units.

I've deleted the file on one machine and we've decided to send the other off for a health check to see if the issue is hardware.

Thanks for your (speedy) replies. I shall try that maintenance pack on the other machine and see how it goes tomorrow.

I've run it on one machine, just need them to test it now and see if it makes any difference. I shall keep you posted.
