Okay, Simpsons is on TV, hence time for a snack to eat whilst I watch. Went to make a cheese sandwich using a crusty roll.

I have a 250g block of cheese. I tried to break off a piece and managed to 'peel' off a layer. This layer was about the thickness of a decent slice of cheese. In fact it was perfect for my needs. But it begs the question: why was the cheese in layers. The block seemed to consist of four slices.

I've bought this same cheese before and never noted it to happen before. Was this an oddity or is there something about the cheese process that I didn't know about. Thought it was a big block.

To my knowledge, cheese is poured in liquid form into the truckle shape, so that kind of thing doesn't really naturally occur. It could be something from a more modern manufacturing process though.

If the cheese is extruded I imagine the protein would tend to line up in a certain direction, giving a layered effect much like slate.

Consider cheese strings for an extreme example.

Going on from this, if the batch they are using is running low then the truckle could have been filled as layers, if air was able to get into the system at some point.

Is it just a block of cheap cheeze? It's probably just how they squeeze blocks together for our tasting delight.

No. It was asda's own brand "english" "cheddar" " cheese".

I've never known it to ever turn out like this. When I first opened the pack, it appeared no different to every block of cheese I've bought before. Sometimes when I'm lazy, instead of using a knife, I'll just break off a chunk to use. This is the first time I managed to pull off a slice! When trying to break off the chunk, it was like the stress placed on it caused the layers to stsrt separating. I've never experienced this before.

Take it back and complain.

Buy a cheese slicer.
