My son has 250Gb in his iMac and 1Tb in his gaming PC, and a 250Gb external for his iTunes library -though he's getting close to the limit on that; there's 160Gb in the old kitchen iMac, otherwise we're all laptop-based, so other storage is all on external drives. There's a 200Gb firewire external with a clone of my laptop HD, and a 500Gb Time Capsule for general backup with an extra 500Gb USB attached for general 'house' storage, movies etc... My wife's iTunes Library is on another 500Gb external, and there's a couple of older 320Gb and 250Gb external drives that have previous libraries on them for general off-site backup. I have a couple of older small drives - 20Gb firewire and 60Gb USB - that are used for one-off backups or 'sneakernet' transfers of bigger files, and a 'ruggedised' 250Gb LaCie Cinema drive for taking movies away on hols.

So, ~4Tb or so, all spread around in what seems like far too many places. I like the idea of a full-on, all-in-one-place NAS, but so far what we have seems to work OK.

Pete

HD-DVD & bluray rips take up 25GB each (at least). DVD rips can be 9GB.
It's easy to use up a lot of space when you're ripping 300 DVD's & 50 HD-DVD/bluray's.
Add in recorded TV @ 1GB an hour & a few hundred CD's and you're starting to need a lot of space.

My storage is attached to the gigabit network that goes to every room in the house (bar toilets but you can use wi-fi in there) with a PC in every room connected to the storage & streaming TV tuners across the LAN from the media server.
It's nice being able to watch something you recorded downstairs on the TV in the bedroom, or watching a movie in HD without needing to get the disc from the shelf in the lounge etc

This PC has one 1TB and 2 500GB drives
My NAS is 2 500GB drives
My media centre has 120GB OS and 500GB USB drive
My old media server has 250GB internal and 250GB USB drive
My two backup PCs have 250GB each
My laptop has 120GB, soon to be swapped for a 64GB SSD.

There's also miscelaneous 40GB ish drives knocking around.

So, errr, nearly 5TB and they're pretty much all full of porn.

My setups have:
250GB in the MacBook
1.65TB in the Mac Pro (650GB for Time Machine, 500GB for OS and general document stuff, 500GB "extra" storage, big stuff gets stuffed here)
Technically 3TB in the server, but thats 2x1TB disks in a mirror and 2x500GB disks in a mirror, so only 1.5TB in there (500GB for OS and personal documents, 1TB for "shares" - media including video, images, music, and other shared things such as ISO files)

200GB in the Mac Mini
80GB in the MacBook
2 TB in the Time Capsule
8GB in the iPhone
2 TB (RAID 1 so only really 1TB) external drive for photos
200 GB drive in the Linux machine
500 GB FAT drive that I use to take round mates houses to share files with them
60 GB 2.5" drive which I don't use (came out of the MacBook)
500 GB 3.4" drive which I don't use (came out of the Time Capsule)

Add a few gig for flash keys, memory cards etc and I'm getting close to 7TB.

OK, let me add it up...

Mac Pro:
320GB main drive
320GB internal 'mirror' drive
240GB windows bootcamp drive
External:
320GB Mac Pro backup drive
500GB Time capsule (NAS)
1TB external time machine drive (FW800 for speed)
1TB external 'archive' drive
250GB external backup drive for netbook (now spare)

That's roughly about 4TB, right? I'm also thinking of upgrading the MacPro by swapping the main and mirror for 1TB drives. I'm also sure I've got a couple more external USB drives in the 100-200GB range somewhere. And that's not counting iPods or the storage in my PS3

I've got about 2GB, but I would say 35GB is mirrored across all machine and my iMac has the most stored on it, at the moment, which has around 120GB use - which includes several virtual machines.
