A system designed to make banking transactions quicker and easier has been branded unfair and confusing by the consumer group Which?

Many bank and credit card customers are still waiting three to four days for money to clear, even though the Faster Payments scheme began two years ago.

One in four credit card companies still cannot receive faster payments.

Although 80% of one-off phone and internet transfers do clear on the same day, the amount allowed varies widely.

Alliance and Leicester put a limit of £250 on faster payments, with Nationwide £1,000 can be transferred on the same day, but with Barclays as much as £10,000 can be sent.

Only half of all standing orders can be sent as fast payments and the limits range from £25 with Clydesdale to £100,000 with Northern Rock.

''It's unacceptable that, two years on from the introduction of faster payments, many customers are still having to wait three to four working days for money to clear." said Phil Jones, personal finance campaigner at Which?

Ian Perryman is a buy-to-let investor who lives in Southsea, Portsmouth. He contacted the BBC after problems he experienced trying to transfer money.

''I find the system very frustrating. I have several bank accounts and, sometimes, if a tenant moves out and one of the flats is empty, I have to move money around quickly.

"It adds an extra complication to all my transactions as I try and work out if the money will clear on the same day or if I need to wait extra days.''

The UK Payments Administration lists on its website the limits banks and building societies set on faster payment transactions.

''It is disappointing that faster payments with higher limits have not been available from all banks and building societies with higher limits from day one, but often they have been restricted due to security reasons,'' said Jemma Smith from UK Payments.

''If you are a customer and you rely on making time sensitive payments, you need to think about whether you have the right bank account.

"It may be worth moving to a new provider which does offer the services you require.''

Even transferring money between my Santander accounts took three days

What's your experience? And LOL at Northern Rock letting you transfer £100k quickly

My Barclays and Australian accounts are instant.

My Santander transfers are instant. Not sure about transferring to different banks - I only do it with my landlord, but they've never complained about a late payment.

My HSBC branch has a notice up saying that if you pay money in before 3pm, even though it won't be actually in your account, you are still credited and can use it.

Only one that isn't instant for me is payments to my credit card account which is annoying

I can do it between my own accounts instantly (same bank), but if I transfer to another bank it takes days. My girlfriend however banks with HSBC and can set-up and complete a transfer (for free) within 2 hours.

My transfers are instantaneous with Natwest, although I am getting seriously pissy at their inability to balance my statement correctly.

Log onto my online banking one day, see the last x number of transactions and my available balance. This is fine. Log on the next day and find no new transactions, but that my balance has changed significantly. Surely if the transaction is on my online statement, the balance should be correct? Since if they are aware of the transaction, it should have already taken place. Which reminds me, I am going to go and shout at them tomorrow. ~15 bob (Damn US keyboard layout) vanished from my account, sending me overdrawn. So they're going to charge me. Which they can take and cram.

I left Natwest for Smile for a number of reasons.

Most of them you have mentioned.

Their outrageous charges was a major reason.

Smile have a limit so that if you do go over your balance in a month (not that I have yet) then there is a maximum charge per month they will charge you.

e.g. if you go over your limit near your pay check and then miss 3 direct debits then Natwest charge you £20~ for going over your limit and £36~ per direct debit missed (even if it was a couple of pounds).

Smile have a £30 maximum monthly charge.

So where Natwest would charge you around £150, smile charge £30.

If I wasn't in a disgusting amount of debt, I'd switch immediately.

Is it overdraft debt?

If so I would recommend moving to another bank and getting a loan to pay it off.

It's a lot nicer to live at £0 than it is to live at -£anything.

Unfortunately my loan is with Natwest so I have to keep my current account to pay the loan.

My understanding of the Natwest system is that if they know of a Direct Debit that's about to come out (they're usually called about 3 days before they come out), they'll remove the amount from your available as they know it's not going to be available. TBH I found HSBC's system of not up-dating anything at all until the money was actually taken was much more inclined to get you to go over limit etc. so I don't mind that part of Natwest at all.

On a related note, anyone know of any good savings accounts (laughable I know, it's more a depository than an interest earner) that DON'T have instant access, and for preference something like 30 days notice?

I've got something I want to save for, and really need to avoid impulse purchases with the money.
