On a related note, anyone know of any good savings accounts (laughable I know, it's more a depository than an interest earner) that DON'T have instant access, and for preference something like 30 days notice?

I've got something I want to save for, and really need to avoid impulse purchases with the money.

Moneysavingexpert.com should give you the best earners in a list that also includes the ones with penalties or point-blank refusals ;)

It took 6 weeks for the last cheque to clear :(

The wonders of the international banking system!

And it cost me about a hundred quid!

Yes but German banks from what I remember are horrendously expensive to transfer funds. they used to have a 1% fee on all international transactions. I used to have to send hundreds of thousands of US dollars to Leipzig and the fees were in the thousands all the time.

Santander usually want about 50 quid for any transfer. Deutsche Bank wanted 1% of the total.

I don't get this.
I bank with "A Bank".
Any online transfers between different current accounts, e-savings accounts and e-ISA's are instant. Yet transferring money to my credit card, also with "A Bank", takes one to two working days?
Why the delay? It's all internal, the money never leaves their systems.

I know. I have a weekly standing order from my current account to the same bank credit card on mondays and it does not arrive till thursday.

Yet if I do the transaction within the bank in person in cash it arrives the same day. Something wrong there. Probably the fact that interest charged is much higher on credit cards than current accounts, so no incentive for the bank to process it any faster.
