Google announces their new Whisper service to insert adverts into your telephone conversations, thus reducing your call costs. Also advertising overlays for photos you take, the new turn-by-turn navigation system will also take you on a route past sponsered establishments.

I'm not interested until they can transmit an advert for a cure for insomnia into my head while I'm sleeping

That I can believe as being of interest to some people. If you know where the billboards are, and what is being advertised on them, then routing past those if you are a sponsor could be interesting to them.

Do you mean to check that your adverts are being displayed correctly, Paul?

Partly, but to make sure that you are more likely to see them. Also, imagine the abuse. You are driving a Ford, and it just happens that Vauxhall are the sponsors, so you get sent on a longer journey and told when you arrive at your destination that it would have been quicker in a Ford.
