Most of the time it has to be spoken word stuff; podcasts or audiobooks as music is too distracting. If I'm just doing Photoshop work that doesn't require 100% attention then I might put some music on but bearing in mind most of my iTunes library is metal, it doesn't happen too often.

At work = none

At home though when I'm hard at work on the PC  I sometimes have Radio 1 on t'internet on some pretty good Creative speakers. Last time I did this I heard Biffy Clyro - Bubbles for the first time and was hooked.

When I'm working, it has to be one track - on repeat.

I get distracted when the track changes, so to avoid that I have one track on repeat.

After a while I zone out to it, but it definitely helps me to focus. It seems to work particularly well when I'm writing code.

In work, God-awful local radio

At home, these days, Spotify* 8-)

*Or the MP3 player. Either way, rock or 60-90's pop :D

How about languages you don't understand?

I listen to opera when I work as i'm like you - lyrics distract me! Although I tend to sing along rather than type...

But when I listen to opera it's not my native language so I don't sing along, even though I know most of the famous stuff. Putting on an opera will eat up 2-3 hours and is just beautiful - the best singers and conductors can convey the emotion in the music without the listener necessarily understanding the words. I've listened/seen enough operas to know what's going on when so I guess I probably get distracted more by it than most people, but it's minimal =)

Also listening to the Final Fantasy soundtracks tends to be pretty epic, especially the piano collections.

That's something I briefly mentioned above. Essentially when you're not focussing on the lyrics you can treat vocals as another instrument. Of course they could be a really ugly instrument that brings the whole piece crashing and burning when it doesn't have any meaning to it, but I generally listen to non-English (and to some extent French) stuff when I'm working.

Music all day, every day.

We're in a cavernous open plan office where conversations carry through the whole space - and we've some particularly dronesome types who like the sound of their own voice. Since I've good hearing and get wound up something chronic when I eavesdrop, I have to have music.

When I'm in a good mood, and work's not getting me down, I listen to either soaring epic tracks or hushed, slow-paced ambient stuff - when all is not so well on goes the dark angry monstrous DnB and dubstep - the nastier the better.

Today I've been mostly listening to Biosphere, The Cinematic Orchestra & Four Tet - so that would suggest I'm in a good mood. 8-)
