I've recently purcahsed a 1TB drive and I've moved a few movies and files to it and now I'm planning to do a complete re-install of snow leopard, I've got file and software I don't use and fancy a fresh start. My question any techniques to get the best out of the re-install? Format the drive fully not just a quick wipe perhaps?? Also has anyone tried this? http://www.brighthub.com/computing/mac- ... 48174.aspx

Just erase the drive and format as Mac OS Extended (journaled) and you'll be fine.

I'm not sure what they guy is on who write that article...I never got the impression from Apple that Snow Leopard was 'just an update'...Apple doesn't do that. As Mark says, just delete the existing partition and create a new one and you'll be fine I've installed Snow Leopard from scratch three times (once on the MacBook when it first came out, then again after I managed to fudge it up, and on the Mac Pro when I got that as I didn't want any Apple installed stuff on there), it's just like installing Leopard.

All I remember Apple saying was that it was available at a reduced price to people who bought 10.5

If you bought the £25 version it was meant to be used as an upgrade only (although it will clean install), to do an official clean install you were meant to buy the full price version.

I have a laptop with Tiger installed, and my main laptop with Leopard.
As I understand it, I buy Snow Leopard and can "upgrade" my main laptop. It won't upgrade Tiger, though. From the blog that's linked to, there's apparently no option available to perform the "archive and install" on a Tiger machine. I don't want to erase and install, as that's a lot of faff getting backups and whatnot organised.
I looked at the option to get the Family Box Set, as Amnesia has. It's £183, but is licensed for up to five Macs in the home. However, I don't really need the iLife stuff, and I don't need all of the iWork stuff, so there'd be a lot of dead wood just to get the full installation copy of Snow Leopard.
Am confusticated.

I bought the single user Mac Box set which is still more than £100. Though I think I got mine off eBay for a lot less than that.

Heather, my understanding was that even if you buy the box set you can't upgrade Tiger...
You'll have to upgrade Tiger to Leopard then Leopard to Snow Leopard if you don't want to do a clean install.

+1 It seems to be the best solution for someone that can't be bothered to do a clean install. (8+) Mark

As I feared. Since I never had a full boxed copy of Leopard (a first for me), I shall have to use the "upgrade" copy I got then. I can move the Tiger box to Leopard, then get Snowy. It's a bit complicated, but it should work. If it doesn't, I'm going back to typewriters, Letraset and Rotring pens.

I did a clean install of Snow Leopard, pretty much as in the article but I don't have the "Macbook Install Disks" the author is going on about.
