Ok so I cant pick one but after much thought here's my selection by console:

NES: Mario 3
Mega Drive: Sonic 2
SNES: Mario Kart (probably one of the most playable games ever tbh)
Mega CD: Sonic CD (NOT the USA soundtrack version though)
3DO: Road Rash
32X: Knuckles Chaotix (not much choice here!)
Playstation: Gran Turismo 2
Saturn: Panzer Dragoon Saga
Nintendo 64: Zelda Ocarina of Time
Early PC: Doom 2
Dreamcast: Soul Calibur / Shenmue
PS2: Metal Gear Solid Series
PC 90's: Half Life 2
Game Cube: Eternal Darkness
Xbox: Halo
Nintendo DS: Mario Kart DS or Super Mario
Xbox360: Grand Theft Auto IV (I know it didnt translate well to PC but is one of the best 360 games. That and Fallout 3)
Wii: Super Smash Bros Brawl
PS3: Little Big Planet (because there's nothing else like it and GT5 isnt out yet!)
PC now: World of Warcraft (too big a success to ignore)

There's so many others I could pick and probably loads I havent played but I've only judged it on the games I've actually played.

+1 for Elite.
That game literally ate entire weekends of my life.

Elite was brilliant on the BBC, but it was slow a hell on my C64 (and yes docking with the space stations without a docking computer nearly always ended in tragedy).

Last Ninja series on C64 is nearly always top on my games list, Sonic 1 on Megadrive and Super Mario Kart (still so much fun) on the SNES.

For PC Half life or my current favorite GT Legends (not genre defining but online it's so much fun).

I think the one game that took most of my time up has to be Lords of Midnight on the ZX Spectrum - pure classic game!.

Another for Elite here. I was also raised on the Acorn (wire-frame) version. Immense game that has not since even been equalled in terms of mechanics, scale and strategic thinking.

However, I would just like to slip Deus Ex in there as a contender. Possibly the most most well thought out and immersive game ever made. Way ahead of it's time, still stands up now and has a ridiculous long play time to completion.

There have been lots of brilliant games over the years, including Road Rash for the Sega Megadrive, the original Prince of Persia, (firslt played on a 286 laptop with CGA graphics, but still great) Doom and Doom 2, Wolfenstein 2d, deer Hunter 2005, (PC) as well as all of the arcade classics, (space invaders, donkey kong, etc with a special mention to Tempest) and Bomb Jack on the Amstrad CPC464, but to me the best game of all time would be the original Kick Off the the Commodore Amiga. Especially when played with a Zipstick Pro joystick. Class!

:!: :!: :!: UPDATE :!: :!: :!:

At this moment ELITE is the most voted for title.

However, it is still not THE BEST GAME OF ALL TIME!

So without further delay let the voting continue.

There can be only one! (Cue lightning flash)

Well actually, I'm fairly certain it is. So there.

Elite

I clocked up more hours on that than any other game. Used to play it at college with a couple of mates, pretty much all night at the weekends. After about 3 years my ship was totally tricked out. I'm not sure if I actually ever made Elite, but if I did it was about a decade after the competition ended! I had the tape version for the Electron, which was slightly annoying when I upgraded to a Floppy BBC because it wasn't compatible.

The only games that I've put that much time into since are Hexen, Descent and Quake. Elite was actually more fun though. I'd play it again, but I can't afford the time!

I've never played it :(

I may have to try get a ROM or something.

Is there any way I can get it to play on my MBP?

This is the one I played mostly:

wiki wrote:
The Acorn Archimedes version of Elite (written by Warren Burch and Clive Gringras) widely regarded as the best conversion of the original game, added intelligent opponents who engage in their own private battles and police who take an active interest in protecting the law. The game world no longer seems to be centred around the player; freighter fleets with escorts go about their own business, pirate formations patrol lawless systems looking for cargo to loot and mining ships can often be found breaking up asteroids for their mineral content. Unlike the mythical Generation Ships of the original, rare occurrences of other non-pirate entities mentioned in the manual really can be found in the Archimedes version: geometric formations of space beacons; hermits living among the asteroids; abandoned ships towed by police (although Dredgers and Generation Ships are confirmed not to exist in Archimedes Elite).[5] The Archimedes version of Elite was originally written to be a space trading game called Trojan - however the obvious similarities eventually meant that to avoid a potential lawsuit Trojan became an official Elite.

I've found this page, but I haven't attempted to get it to work yet:
